Dr. M. Keith Foskey says:
Thank you for this insightful question. The Sabbath was given to Israel as a sign of the covenant established with them at Sinai, which is why it is included in the Ten Commandments. In the New Covenant, believers find their rest in Christ; the Sabbath was a shadow, and Christ is the substance (Colossians 2:16-17). Following the inauguration of the New Covenant, Christians began to gather for worship on the Lord’s Day (Sunday) in honor of the day Christ rose from the dead. It is important to note that Sunday is not the Sabbath; Christ is our Sabbath rest. Nevertheless, Sunday holds special significance as it commemorates the resurrection, a cornerstone of our faith without which believers would have no hope (1 Corinthians 15:14-19).
